Why frustrate yourself using willpower and patches?

New Scientist magazine analysed the results of 600 quit smoking studies involving 72,000 people. They came to the conclusion that nothing is as effective as hypnosis. They demonstrated that 6% of people can quit using willpower and 10% using NRT. This means that patches and the like only help 4% of smokers to quit.

In my opinion NRT is a total waste of time and public money - it should not be available either free or subsidised on the National Health. Even the manufacturers admit that you need willpower to obtain a satisfactory result. If you had the willpower in the first place you wouldn't need patches! Patches do not provide you with willpower, they provide you with nicotine!

Quitting with NRT is a grim experienceMy records show that around 58% of my male clients and 46% of my female clients had tried NRT unsuccessfully before seeking my help, sometimes for months on end and frequently on more than one occasion. The money wasted (average £122 per course), the time spent and the stress involved is just ridiculous. Why put yourself through all that misery? And for what? What do you get? You get the mindset of a frustrated ex-smoker. That is why people use NRT in the longterm. They never get over being a smoker and turn to NRT as a crutch while they wean themselves off cigarettes, only to discover that it is a very poor substitute for the real thing.

The reason why it is so difficult to quit using willpower and patches is that smoking is largely habit. Habits are controlled by your subconscious mind, and it is from your subconscious mind that willpower must flow. Freedom from tobacco is a state of mind, and not a patch on the arm.

Patches and other NRT have no impact whatsoever at all on your subconscious mind nor on the hand to mouth habit of smoking, the emotional crutch of smoking or the desire to smoke in stressful or social situations - which partly explains why these products are so useless. Add to this the fact that your mind expects you to physically smoke in certain situations and you can begin to understand why these products do not work. A patch on your arm is not the same as a cigarette between your fingers or in your mouth.
